“Citylights” Starring Rajkummar Rao, Patralekha, Manav Kaul; directed by Hansal Mehta; music by Jeet Ganguly.
National Award winning director Hansal Mehta teams up with his “Shahid” star once again in this remake of the British film, “Metro Manila.” It tells the story of a poor farmer from Rajasthan who migrates to Mumbai after a tragedy. Rajkummar Rao, who wowed audiences with his performance in “Shahid,” for which he won the National Award, plays villager Deepak Singh, who hopes to find a better future in the city with his wife and young daughter. However, after arriving, he quickly discovers the challenges of big city life. Patralekha makes a promising debut as the young wife. The film deals with the struggle faced by the migrants of urban India. How with the power of their love these individuals strive to meet its challenges forms the story. Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt was so impressed with “Citylights” that he gave his “Saaransh” Filmfare trophy to Mehta in a symbolic gesture to carry forward the torch of cinema.
“Holiday: A Soldier is Never Off Duty” Starring Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Govinda, Sumeet Raghavan, Freddy Daruwala; directed by A.R. Murugadoss; music by Pritam.
A.R. Murugadoss, the maker of the superhit “Ghajini” delivers another action thriller. Lots of positive buzz surrounds this remake of his Tamil film “Thuppakki.” Akshay Kumar plays Captain Virat Bakshi, a special agent in the Indian Army who goes home to Mumbai for a holiday. His family takes him to see a potential bride, Saiba, played by Sonakshi Sinha. Initially, he finds the girl to be too shy and simple. Later, he is surprised by her true personality when he discovers that she is actually a boxer. The two hit it off and have fun in the city joined by Virat’s friend, played by Sumeet Raghavan, who is a Mumbai Police inspector. Then events transpire, which drag him into a network of terrorism. The patriotic Virat fights to wipe out the city of various terrorist sleeper cells. Govinda plays a pivotal role as Bakshi's commanding officer. While there is song and dance, Akshay Kumar has described the film as a serious thriller on the army’s fight against terrorism. The action director of “Skyfall” Greg Powell was brought in to choreograph fight scenes.
