Book Reviews
This is Tampa resident Hina Patel's first poetry book and indeed it is true to its title. "The expressible thoughts have come running from my heart and soul, to the edge of my pen nib in the form of poetic words," she explains.
The business degree graduate has written the poems in a simple language that everyone can understand. The book is made up of four categories: Eternal love, Soft Sorrows, Divine Love and Faithful Love. Poetry to Patel is "words from within."
"Yours Truly" turned out to be a quick read for yours truly. So should it for our readers.
A native of Guyana, Sasenarine Persaud of New Tampa is an author of 10 books of fiction and poetry. He has worked as a writer in Canada before moving to the United States. Among his awards include the K M Hunter Foundation Award, the Arthur Schomburg Award and fellowships from the University of Miami and Boston University.
The crucial point of the book of poems is Boston but it's fascinating how Persaud also brings in Mumbai, Tampa, Toronto, and Georgetown into the mix. "In a Boston Night" is a must-read for fans of Persaud and a welcome read for those new to this talented poet.
Kudos to Asha Sharma, granddaughter of Samuel Evans Stokes Jr., for a brilliant account of the Quaker missionary. In 1904, the 21-year-old arrived in India to work in a home for lepers. He adopted Indian dress and founded a mendicant religious brotherhood. Stokes then married a Rajput Christian girl, converted to Hinduism and adopts a new name. In the 1920s, he participated in Mahatma Gandhi's independence struggle. However, he is most remembered in India as the man who introduced American Delicious apples to the Himalayas.
Sharma of California has done great justice to the memory of Stokes with this narration compiled using her grandfather's books, journals and letters. It offers a window into Gandhi's India for those born after independence in 1947 and beyond.
