The Warrior, winner of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts
(BAFTA) Award for Best British Film, opens in New York City and Los Angeles
on July 15 and additional cities later. Hopefully, this tale of a local
enforcer for a rich Indian warlord who renounces his life of violence and
then becomes prey of his murderous ex-colleagues will make it into Florida
theaters soon.
Directed by Asif Kapadia, The Warrior follows the heros journey from the
deserts of Rajasthan through the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. It
features a mix of samurai-style movie action, stirring performances,
sumptuous landscape photography and a mystical tale of personal redemption.
Kapadia, who makes his directorial debut with the film, has crafted an
exotic, yet universal, story about the human spirit.
Irfan Khan stars as Lafcadia, a skilled and deadly Rajput warrior, who works
at the behest of a brutal local warlord (Anupam Shyam) who regularly sends
Lafacadia to carry out such savage punishments as beheadings and pillaging
raids of entire villages. Then one day, Lafcadia decides to go straight.
In the middle of a massacre, a mystical encounter with a young girl brings
about a moment of transformation in which the warrior drops his sword and
vows never to kill again. Gathering his only son Katiba (Puru Chhibber),
Lafcadia hits the road and heads for his native mountain village.
But the warlord who controls Lafcadia will not let his warrior go. The
warlord soon dispatches a second warrior, the ruthless Biswas (Aino
Annuddin), to hunt down Lafcadia and bring back his head.
I didnt want to make a small film. I wanted to push myself as a filmmaker
and make something unique to me, says Kapadia of Indian descent but now
living in England. The project was a huge leap into the unknown but I loved
the story and was desperate to see it come to life. I was drawn to shooting
something on a large scale, with distant, strange landscapes, horses,
deserts and burning villages. And I had fallen in love with the amazing
light of India, the people, the faces, the choices of untouched landscapes.
Presented by Award Academy winner Anthony Minghella (The English Patient,
Cold Mountain) and Miramax Films, the 88-minute movie is in Hindi with
English subtitles. It is produced by Bertrand Faivre.

Meet Thomas Umer Tevana -- the only Indian American on the list of the
50 Hottest Bachelors list in the 40-million readership People
magazine (June 27 issue). Remember the Indian American FBI agent in the
controversial Jo Bole So Nihaal? Yeah, that was Tevana. He now joins
the ranks of such actors as Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell in
People magazines top bachelors ranking.
The 31-year-old told People magazine that he has lived in quite a few
places and speaks French, German and Hindi. Would he date an A-lister?
I dont know, he quipped. I saw what happened to Jen and Ben. I
dont want that!
Tevana was pleasantly shocked to hear that his name was on the People
list. I was aware that the magazine was looking for a diverse group of
nominees, he admitted in an interview with Khaas Baat. My name
somehow came up somewhere and People starting to find out more
information about me. They even conducted background checks before
informing me that I would be among the 50. Doing the People shoot,
which lasted several days, was like participating in a pageant.
People, which said its list of the 50 Hottest Bachelors are men who are
"in a class by themselves," said the magazine couldn't estimate the
pool of candidates for the top 50. "It's enormous," a spokesperson said
at a reception held in honor of the bachelors. "I don't even know that
we can count it ... It's really a constant ebb and flow of bachelors
and it starts out pretty big. We're seeing who's still available as we
get closer and again he's really doing well and at the top of his game.
We're looking to present the hottest."
As for being single, Tevana said, "I'm still waiting for the right girl
to come along too. Did all the other guys out there get married
already?"
Tevana was surprised about the controversy over Jo Bole So Nihaal, in
which he played a Hindi-speaking liaison to Sunny Deol. As soon as I
landed in the U.S. from India, I was off to meet the People folks for
interviews and photo opportunities, he said. So I was very busy
during the time that the film was pulled out of some theaters.
Born in San Francisco, Tevana has been a model and acted in television
shows such as JAG, One Life to Live and The Pretender. Though he
hasnt signed up for any Bollywood film a la Jo Bole So Nihaal, he
has talked to Mahesh Bhatt. We will soon be starting rehearsals. If it
works out, that will be nice.
In the meantime, he is gearing up for his role in Access Denied of an
Indian American doctor who falls in love with a girl from Bombay. It
is a big film actress from Bollywood whose name I cannot divulge right
now, he said with enthusiasm. I am also working on My Mothers
Baby, which is more of a HBO film but does have desi elements in it.
Silsiilay: Starring Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Bhumika Chawla, Rahul Bose, Divya Dutta, Riya Sen, Jimmy Shergil, Ashmit Patel; directed by Khalid Mohammed; music by Himesh Reshammiya.
After last years Tehzeeb, Khalid Mohammeds next directorial venture Silsiilay is an upbeat look at relationships told through the stories of three women. Tabu plays Rehana, a housewife who must confront her unfaithful husband portrayed by the playback singer and upcoming actor Kay Kay Menon. In another story, Bhumika Chawla is Zia, a successful Bollywood actress whose relationship with her mentor, played by Rahul Bose, is on the verge of a breakup. Riya Sen is the third woman Anushka, a telephone receptionist who seeks tenderness in her relationship with a wealthy suitor played by Ashmit Patel. Meanwhile, Jimmy Shergill portrays an office colleague who loves her silently. She must decide between the two in a romantic finale, which promises a twist. The three stories are weaved together into a complete picture.
The vibrant city of Calcutta in the 1960s serves as the backdrop for this love story based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyays story adapted by producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Newcomer Vidya Balan plays a young girl named Lolita who lives with her uncles family. She meets Shekhar played by Saif Ali Khan, son of an affluent businessman and budding musician. Shekhar and Lolita grow up sharing joys and sorrows and a relationship of deep friendship and trust occurs. Only when an outsider named Girish, played by Sanjay Dutt, arrives do they discover their true feelings for each other. Greed, misunderstandings and deception plague Lolita and Shekhars innocent love. Will they be swept apart by these tumultuous events or is it possible they can reunite? The contemporary retelling of this tale is expected to be full of emotion and drama and has a melodious musical score. Look for Rekha who makes a special appearance in a nightclub song.
Paheli: Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Amitabh Bachchan, Juhi Chawla, Suniel Shetty, Anupam Kher; directed by Amol Palekar; music by M.M. Kreem.
An eagerly awaited film of 2005 and Shah Rukh Khans first release of the year (not counting special appearances), Paheli is a beautiful folk tale from Rajasthan that has come to life. Looking enchanting, Rani Mukherji plays a girl named Lachchi, who is married to a man interested solely in making money. On their wedding night, the husband leaves home for five years to pursue his business. Shah Rukh Khan plays a ghost in love with her. The ghost takes on the husbands appearance and enters Lachchis life. When the husband returns home, relatives and villagers are bewildered. How the situation gets resolved is the Paheli. This film shows the dilemma of a woman who must choose between a ghosts eternal love and her husbands insensitivity. Paheli is based on the story Duvidha written by Vijaydan Detha and is a Shah Rukh Khan production.
