“Simran” Starring Kangana Ranaut, Soham Shah, Esha Tiwari Pande, Aneesha Joshi; directed by Hansal Mehta; music by Sachin-Jigar.
We loved her performances in “Queen” and “Tanu Weds Manu.” Known for playing quirky, determined and likeable characters, Kangana Ranaut is back, here she plays Praful Patel, a young divorcee in America with a self-described penchant for gambling and theft. She has a vibrant albeit slightly unconventional personality. Somehow, her ambition leads her to a life of crime. Sohum Shah plays her love interest. We’re confident Ranaut will deliver another stellar performance. Director Hansal Mehta won the National Film Award for direction in 2013 for “Shahid.” Last year, he received much praise for “Aligarh.” Reports say “Simran” is inspired by the real life case of Sandeep Kaur, a nurse in the U.S. who was sent to prison after being convicted of robbing banks to pay off gambling debts.
“Bhoomi” Starring Sanjay Dutt, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharad Kelkar, Sidhant Gupta; directed by Omung Kumar; music by Sachin-Jigar.
Sanjay Dutt makes a comeback in this revenge drama that explores a father and daughter relationship and the emotional turmoil they face after a calamity. Sanjay Dutt features as a doting father, Arun. Aditi Rao Hydari plays his daughter Bhoomi. Father and daughter share a strong bond. He’s found a perfect match for her and she is soon to be married when a tragic turn of events brings trauma to their lives. Known for his roles on television, Sharad Kelkar plays the antagonist. The film was shot in Agra. Dutt himself has sung the Ganesh Aarti in the film. Director Omung Kumar previously made “Mary Kom” and “Sarbjit” and has praised Dutt’s performance. His many fans should not be disappointed.
