Highway movie posterThe director of “Jab We Met,” “Love Aaj Kaal” and “Rockstar,” Imtiaz Ali brings us this unusual coming of age story, one he says has stayed with him for 15 years. It tells the journey of two characters from vastly different backgrounds. Alia Bhatt plays Veera, a young city girl, full of life, soon to be married. Suddenly, her life changes forever when she is abducted by a group of rustic criminals. After discovering she is a powerful industrialist’s daughter, the gang realizes their mistake. But their leader Mahabir, played by Randeep Hooda, is adamant; releasing her is not an option. Frightful days pass, but as their truck travels miles and the scenery changes day by day, she feels that she has changed also. Gradually, a strange bond develops between the victim and the oppressor. Despite being captive, she feels free and doesn’t want to return home, only wanting the journey to never end. The cast and the crew travelled through six north Indian states and 15 towns with a minimum script using primarily natural light and a handheld camera to capture the views of the countryside. The director said maestro A.R. Rahman captures the soul of the story through his music. Actress Alia Bhatt makes her debut as a singer.
