The acclaimed director of “Rang de Basanti” and “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” delivers this modern retelling of a popular Punjabi folktale. With screenplay by poet and lyricist Gulzar, the story unfolds in two different eras, one real and one fantastical. The film is based on the legend of Mirza-Sahiban, a tragic story about star-crossed lovers. In interviews, Mehra said he saw the play performed in college and the story never left him. Shot in desolate Ladakh and vibrant Rajasthan, the film introduces Harshvardhan Kapoor, son of actor Anil Kapoor, and Saiyami Kher as Adil and Soochi. As the lovers grapple with forces that seek to keep them apart in both worlds, they discover that even a moment of true love is worth an entire lifetime. Mehra said, the stories, from two different times run parallel, “The present picks up where the folklore leaves you. Finally, both of them merge, the lines blur and they become one.” The film unfolds with heightened drama and enchanting music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. Six of the songs are composed by Daler Mehndi. The makers call it an epic love story that plays out in contemporary times.
