HINDI MOVIE PREVIEWS

Shephali Rele

by SHEPHALI J. RELE

Bang BangBang Bang” Starring Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Danny Denzongpa, Jaaved Jaffrey, Jimmy Shergill, Pawan Malhotra; directed by Siddharth Anand; music by Vishal-Shekhar.

Lots of eye candy in this official remake of the Tom Cruise starrer “Knight and Day.” There’s a chance encounter between an unassuming bank receptionist Harleen, played by Katrina Kaif and the mysterious yet charming Rajveer Nanda played by Hrithik Roshan. What follows is on surge of ditched planes, car chases, shoot-outs, bombing raids and global mayhem. While the international chase ensues, Rajveer is trying to convince Harleen that he's actually the good guy. But can she really trust him, and will trust make a difference once the bullets start flying? The makers promise edge of the seat excitement and lots of action as the duo fight against all odds. Expect enough dare devil stunts, explosions, trigger-happy assassins and pandemonium to justify title. Roshan has described the movie as “cool and fun,” and said his character was easy to portray since it was much like him. The catchy upbeat tunes have been climbing the charts.

Tabu and Shahid Kapoor play mother and son in “Haider”

“HaiderStarring Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Lalit Parimod, Ashish Vidyarthi; directed by Vishal Bhardwaj; music by Vishal Bhardwaj.

After adapting Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Othello as “Maqbool” and “Omkara,” director Vishal Bhardwaj takes on Hamlet, a story that likely needs no introduction and features a talented star cast. Shahid Kapoor plays Haider, a young man who returns home to Kashmir after receiving news of his father's disappearance. Not only does he learn that security forces are holding his father, played by Irrfan Khan, for harboring militants, but that his mother, played by the Tabu, is in a relationship with his uncle. Intense drama follows between mother and son as both struggle to come to terms with news of his father's death. Haider discovers that his uncle, played by Kay Kay Menon was responsible for the gruesome murder. His journey to avenge his father's death follows. Shraddha Kapoor plays Arshia, a journalist and Haider’s love interest. The movie was shot on location in picturesque Jammu and Kashmir. Really looking forward to this one, Bhardwaj is a master director with a skill for Shakespeare storytelling and as is known for featuring exceptional music, here with a Kashmiri folk flavor.

“Happy New YearStarring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah; directed by Farah Khan; music by Vishal and Shekhar .

After her superhit “Om Shanti Om,” director Farah Khan brings its lead pair together again in this Diwali entertainer. It’s a musical heist revenge drama with an ensemble cast. Think “The Italian Job” meets “Dance-Off.” The characters form an unlikely dance team as a cover for retribution with Shah Rukh Khan as their leader Charlie, the suave mastermind with a mission that’s personal. Deepika Padukone is Mohini, a bar dancer who dreams of running a dance school. She becomes the group’s dance teacher and more. Nandu, played by Abhishek Bachchan, is a drunken squanderer who Charlie finds. Somehow, Nandu is the key to his plans. Bomon Irani plays Tammy, a champion safe cracker who once worked with Charlie’s father. Sonu Sood plays Jag, an ex-Indian army caption, a gentle giant who’s also an explosives expert. Vivaan Shah is Rohan, the youngest member of the team and requisite computer genius. Their target is a Dubai-based billionaire and powerful business tycoon, played by Jackie Shroff. How this unlikely bunch transforms into a dance team competing in a world championship while plotting diabolical revenge forms the rest of the story. Pass the popcorn please.
