TAMPA STUDENT ATTENDS UF SCIENCE RESEARCH PROGRAM

Rina Bhalani of Tampa spent seven weeks at University of Florida in Gainesville as part of the Student Science Training Program (SSTP) this summer.

Up to 100 selected rising seniors and qualified rising juniors who are at least 16 years old by the start of the residential research program and considering medicine, math, computer, science, or engineering careers are enrolled. Its emphasis is research participation with a UF faculty research scientist and his/her research team.

The 12th-grader in the Hillsborough High International Baccalaureate Program had hands-on experience in laboratory research. "Researching allowed me to expand my knowledge for science and learn more about a certain topic," said the 17-year-old. "Being on a college campus was magnificent because I got to know how college life actually was with no parents and having responsibility and attending classes in the morning." Each weekend was packed with fun-filled field trips, said Bhalani.

"It got our minds off the work and helped us to enjoy and relax. SSTP helped me grow as a person and make new life long friends in the process. It taught me how to balance my work from free time."
