Two Tampa Students Headed to National Competition

Riju Datta, a sixth-grader at Corbett Preparatory School of IDS, will go to Washington, D.C., in May to compete in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee as the representative for the Tampa Bay area. Riju survived 15 rounds of competition with 24 spellers at the Tampa Bay Regional Bee, held in March at St. Petersburg College. His winning word was “altiplano,” a high plain or plateau. Riju, who lives in Carrollwood, has advanced from Corbett Prep’s school spelling bee to the regional competition four times. He is the first student from Corbett Prep, previously known as Independent Day School, to advance to the national competition. The Scripps National Spelling Bee will take place the week of May 25.

Ameya Mujumdar

Ameya Mujumdar, a fifth-grader at Turner Elementary School, won the State Geographic Bee held in Jacksonville University in April. Ameya will represent Florida in the National Geographic Bee Championship to be held May 19-21 at the headquarters of the National Geographic Society in Washington D.C. Out of 101 participants (4th-8th grades) from all over Florida who qualified for the State Championship by first winning the school contest and then passing a written test, Ameya was among the youngest. He won $100 gift certificate with a crystal trophy and several other goodies. Ameya and his teacher are invited with all expenses paid to D.C. for the national competition to be telecast May 22 on the NatGeo Channel. The Geographic Bee includes questions on cultural, physical and historical geography among other subjects related to the world.

Khaas Baat congratulates both students on their accomplishments and wishes them the best in the national competitions.
