DR. Jay Mulaney NAMED Lakeland Regional Health Board Chairman

Lakeland Regional Health has named Jay Mulaney, M.D., as chairman of the health system’s Board of Directors. A board certified ophthalmologist with Central Florida Eye Associates, he has served on the Lakeland Regional Medical Center/Lakeland Regional Health System Board of Directors since 2008.

His past accomplishments include being president of the Polk County Medical Association, the medical staff at Lakeland Regional Medical Center as well as the Central Florida Physicians Alliance. His community leadership roles have included the Chairman, Board of Directors of Volunteers In Service to The Elderly and as a director of the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Dr. Mulaney is a graduate of T.N. Medical College (Nair Hospital) in Mumbai and performed his internship at Cook County Hospital. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania, and Fellowships in Glaucoma with the University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Mulaney has been named to America’s Top Opthalmologists by the Consumer’s Research Council of America nine times and has been included in the Consumer’s Research Council list of America’s Top Physicians. He was also included on Florida Magazine’s list of Outstanding Physicians in Florida.

Dr. Mulaney lives in Lakeland with his wife Kavita who is a physical therapy graduate of the University of Florida. They have two daughters.  


COMEDIAN RAJIV SATYAL ADDRESSES HAF FUNDRAISER

HAFRecently, superstar comedian Rajiv Satyal entertained a full house at the Hindu American Foundation’s Annual Tampa Fundraising Gala. The event, attended by HAF co-founders, staff, volunteers, and community leaders, marked the hugely successful night the HAF-Tampa chapter.

In his keynote address, Satyal used clean comedic styling to paint a riveting picture of how his Indian and Hindu upbringing laid the foundation to his successful career in the entertainment industry. He spoke on the dynamics he learned to balance when being a Hindu American and navigating dueling cultures. Satyal became a household name after his video “I AM INDIAN” went viral in 2014.

Suhag Shukla, HAF’s Executive Director, and Seetha S. Aiyar, HAF’s Director of Philanthropic Partnerships, were present. They gave the local Hindu community a chance to learn about HAF’s latest successes including the recent testimony provided to Congress on the plight of Hindu minorities living in Bangladesh; as well as, the foundation’s recent anti-bullying survey, which specifically gathered data on bullying faced by Hindu American students.

GUJARATI SAMAJ OF TAMPA BAY LOOKING FOR MUSICAL TALENT

Gujarati Samaj of Tampa Bay is inviting musical talents of all ages from its member pool to join the GSTB Musical Group it looks to create.

“Please send your vocal or musical clip of at least two-minutes via email to us by Dec. 20,” said GSTB President Jigisha Desai. “We are also inviting our young high school members with interests in graphic design, journalism and multimedia to email us to get involved in creating our newsletters three times a year.”

GSTB has already started working on its first newsletter for 2016, “so please contact us immediately to be part of it,” said Desai. “Our members are invited to register and be part of our event planning by volunteering their time and talents. We invite everyone who supports Gujarat and Gujarati culture to become Samaj members and be part of our quality events and activities.”
