Two Indian Americans were among five University of South Florida, Tampa, professors recently named as Charter Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). They are Shyam Mohapatra and D. Yogi Goswami.

Election to NAI Fellow status is a high professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society. Nearly 200 renowned inventors and innovators from more than 60 universities, research institutes and governmental agencies worldwide attended the second annual NAI meeting at University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa.

D. Yogi Goswami, who holds 18 patents, is a professor of chemical engineering and co-director of the Clean Energy Research Center at USF. He and his research team are building a solar power plant on campus. “Innovation and entrepreneurship are the engines of economic growth of USA,” said Goswami. “NAI has recognized people that drive innovation. It is indeed an honor to be included in the Charter group of Fellows of NAI.”

"I definitely feel honored to be one among these 101 chartered fellows and being considered at par with peers that included eight Nobel Laureates, 14 presidents of research universities and  research institutes, 53 members of the National Academies, 11 inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, two Fellows of the Royal Society, five recipients of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, four recipients of the National Medal of Science, and 31 AAAS Fellows, among other major awards and distinctions,” said Mohapatra. “There is rarely an award or honor that is lauded by the U.S. Congress as was being a charted Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. I am really pleased.”
