This epic tale of eternal love set in pre-independence India features a talented multi-star cast.
Six characters are entangled in relationships but separated by the contrast of the two worlds they inhabit. The elite, opulent world of the Chaudhry family and the mysterious, musical side of Hira Mandi in their town of Husnabad in North India. Sanjay Dutt is the iron-fisted patriarch Balraj Chaudhry. Madhuri Dixit plays the mysterious enchanting Bahaar Begum, who longs for acceptance. Sonakshi Sinha is Satya Chaudhry, steady in the midst of chaos. Aditya Roy Kapur plays Dev Chaudhry, willing to fight for what’s right with a virtuous heart. The fiery Roop, portrayed by Alia Bhatt, is rooted in traditions yet yearns for a world beyond her own. Varun Dhawan plays Zafar a flamboyant daredevil. The sides clash when Roop Chaudhry encounters Zafar and deep-buried truths are revealed. Secrets of betrayal and affairs threaten both worlds. The makers say “Kalank” is the story of a vivid and ethereal world, lost when the fire of Partition engulfs the country. Producer Karan Johar said the story was conceived with his late father, Yash Johar. Expectations are high with beautiful imagery seen in the trailers and songs. Abhishek Varman previously wrote and directed “2 States.”
